What is Snoring

Snoring is the butt of jokes around the water cooler and makes for embarrassing moment when staying in the home of family members or friends overnight. It is interesting to note that many do not actually understand exactly what snoring encompasses. Thus they fail to understand that this is a condition that may actually be a secondary symptom of something a lot more serious requiring medical intervention.

The physics of snoring show that a sound is created because of vibrations involving throat and mouth tissues. The sound indicates that there is an obstruction which stands in the way of the air that is inhaled, and the resulting blockage causes the sound.

Reasons for snoring vary as does the severity of the condition. In some cases problem with the nasal passages are associated with snoring, while in other areas it is actually weight gain that adds mass to the throat and thus impedes breathing. Muscle tension or overly relaxed muscles in the throat area are also identified as presenting physical reasons for snoring.

Snoring may be caused by sleep apnea, a condition that is actually very dangerous to the sleeper and needs to be treated under the supervision of a physician. Failure to do so may result in a loss of quality of life and might actually even lead to death. Smoking is another cause of snoring and when the sounds become so loud that vibrations indicate a serious obstruction, smoking cessation is a vital necessity.

Fortunately, even in the short term snoring can be treated. While smoking cessation is undergone or a sleep study is scheduled, small devices—most notably Breathe EZ—may be clipped to the septum and keep the airways open to promote proper airflow. Changing sleeping positions is also shown to offer temporary relief. Generally speaking, the sleeper might need to sleep on one side only and prop some pillows under her or his side to lessen the chance of accidental position change during the night.

Of course, while treating the snoring itself is a good way of ensuring that those sharing your household will get a good night’s sleep, seeking out medical attention to pinpoint the actual reason for your snoring is instrumental in helping you get a good night’s sleep as well.
